Placing Ads Inside Or Between Blogger Posts

AdSense have always stressed that the most effective position for ads are within content, so when I found out you can insert AdSense between posts directly via the LAYOUT, I immediately thought I could insert the ads in the middle of a post, which is impossible to do up to now. Unfortunately, that insert ads in between 2 posts, not in the midddle of a post, something I had been trying to do for a long time. You can actually do this by messing with the template. Refer to Incorporate AdSense within the content (click BACK button to get back to this page).

The way to do direct from Blogger LAYOUT it is very simple. Sign into Blogger, which will get you into the Dashboard with a list of all the blogs you have in that Blogger account. In the section for "Blog posts", usually in the middle of the LAYOUT (may be in a slightly different position if you use non-standard Blogger templates):

Click EDIT (highlighted with a red circle). You will get a "Configure Blog Posts" "pop-up".

Tick "Show ads between posts", select your format by clicking on the down arrow or just leave it as the default half-banner and chose you ad colors or just leave it as the default "Blend Template" which is advisable (all 3 highlighted with red circles).

Then just scroll down and click "Save Changes". Now you don't have to worry about violating AdSense policy as this is done via cooperation between Google AdSense and Google Blogger. However, if you want the AdSense withing the post, you will still have to depend on the hack described in Incorporate AdSense ads within posts and wrap text around them (click BACK button to get back to this page.

The only thing to note is that if you had applied for your AdSense account direct from Blogger, there is nothing extra to do. If you have got your AdSense account via some other means, and this is the first time you are adding AdSense ads direct from Blogger, you may be asked to grant Blogger access to your AdSense account, which I believe is perfectly safe to do so.

One final thing. Just to make sure that the ads have the same publisher's ID, at the blog with the ads between posts, I click VIEW > PAGE SOURCE to see the page source of that webpage, and this is what I found:

The "pub-12345....." was the same as my AdSense publisher ID (figure altered for security) thus assuring the ads displayed are actually "mine".

What Webmasters have concluded
Webmasters have diverse views on how to increase CTR. It largely depends upon the keywords you are targeting, look of your website, quality of its content, placement of AdSense ads, page optimization, and various other factors. Generally, AdSense blocks wrapped between the quality content works the best. For the websites having poor quality content, placing the Ads before the start of the content works well.
If you develop a poor quality content website, it will likely give you high CTR and clicks, but you will be getting low priced ads. Besides, nobody will like to add your URL to their favorites. More CTR (Click Thru Ratio) means more clicks on your Google Ads. But, is CTR all about position and colors of your ads? No! It's a lot more than that. CTR also depends upon the quality of traffic, relevancy of ads, and even the subject of your website. Let's get in detail:
Do you own a High CTR website?
Yes! CTR varies from Industry to industry too. It depends upon the keywords you are using to make your web page. It has been observed that more technical the topic is (but not necessarily) less CTR it will give you (for example Search Engine Optimization, Affiliate Network - exceptions are always there), but still works if the Ad content is well written.

How to Avoid Having Your AdSense Accout Banned for Click Fraud

If you trawl through the AdSense message boards you can’t help but come across tales of woe from AdSense publishers that have had their account banned by Google.
Below is a list of ways people have been banned from AdSense and information on how
to avoid it happening to you.

Don’t click on your own ads

The obvious one but still people do it. Google has the IP address of the computer/s that you’ve used to create and check your AdSense account. If it sees that this IP address clicks one of your ads you’re in trouble.
Don’t do it. It’s theft. Not from Google but from the AdWords advertisers.

If you want to go to a site advertised by one of your ads don’t click on it look at the URL of the advertising site at the bottom of the ad and type it into your browser.

If you click on one accidentally (which does happen) you’re probably be ok but it’s worth dropping a quick email to Google with an explanation and apology
Don’t log in to AdSense from a shared computer.

As I said above Google keeps a record of every machine IP address used to look at your account. If you check your stats on a machine then someone else clicks on your ads from the same machine Google sees this as click fraud. Worth bearing in mind when thinking of checking your stats from somewhere like an Internet Café.

Don’t log in to your AdSense account from work.

Apart from getting in trouble with the company that employs you there’s also a further real risk. Most companies use a proxy server to access the Internet. A proxy server with ONE IP ADDRESS. Therefore you checking your ads from work means this proxy IP address being recorded by Google as one that you use. Problem is if there are 1000 people in your company it is the same IP address for them too. Google can’t differentiate between you and the other 999 employees in your company. If one of these 999 clicks on one of your ads it’s ban time.
Don’t get into a ‘I’ll click your ads if you click mine’ agreement with another Webmaster.
As above Google will have your IP address and that of every AdSense publisher. If they see these IP addresses consistently clicking on each other ads it’s goodbye for both of you.

Don’t tell friends and family.

Telling friends and family about your money making websites can lead to problems. Even if you tell them not to click on your ads there’s always the chance that Auntie Maud will think it’s a good idea to make some extra money for her favourite nephew. 100 clicks later from the same visitor and your account is screaming ‘Click Fraud’.
Receiving clicks from illegal traffic
Check the AdSense TOS for sources of traffic that aren’t allowed by Google. These include methods like Traffic exchange, PTC advertising, Auto surf etc.

Do monitor your visitor and AdSense figures

Check your account at least once a day. If you see a massive spike coupled with a massive increase in Page CTR investigate using your visitor stats website. If you see it’s all come from the same IP address you could have been the victim of a malicious attack – inform Google via email and offer them access to your logs.

HTC Hero Review

In a nutshell: The HTC Hero is a very polished touchscreen smartphone, running Google's Android operating system. HTC have raised their game for the Hero, with a new user interface making it a comfortable yet powerful platform for mobile communication. It's a very powerful phone and the only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because it's missing video calling and an FM radio.

The HTC Hero is the third "Google phone" running the Android operating system, and these Android phones just keep getting better! The Hero uses very similar hardware to the HTC Magic, but there are a number of distinct improvements. The device has been restyled, giving it a much more polished look and feel. It feels nice in the hand, with the trackball and buttons angled forward and easy for the thumb to use. The Hero is the same size as the Magic, but is slightly heavier and incorporates a higher capacity battery, giving longer standby and talk times. It also has an improved 5 megapixel camera.

T-Mobile have released the Hero as the T-Mobile Touch G2, but it is basically the same phone.

The user interface has also been improved for the Hero, and this is the first phone to feature HTC Sense, a concept based around personalisation, communication and a third ingredient that HTC mysteriously refer to as "discover the unexpected." The personalisation manifests itself through customisable widgets that can be placed on the home screen. These give you easy access to the features that you use regularly, and you can change the size and design of the widgets to suit your taste. You can also create multiple profiles, so that your work, weekend and holiday profiles match the functionality that you need in each situation. Another new feature called Footprints lets you create virtual "postcards" related to a specific place, so that you can identify it by its GPS co-ordinates and then associate pictures, video and notes with that Footprint. There's no rocket science here, but it does lead to a very pleasant user environment that is highly tailored to your personal needs and interests.

The second part of HTC Sense is all about communication, and this is of course what a modern mobile phone should have at its heart. As well as the basics of making calls and sending texts, the Hero is a good platform for emailing, and is also intended for the Facebook age, with easy access to social networking and photo sharing sites. The third aspect of HTC Sense is called "discover the unexpected" and, we think, is supposed to be about connections between data. Not quite sure about this one, to be honest - if anyone understands the concept, please post below!

The touch based user interface certainly works well, and confirms Android as a solid platform for modern mobile communications. Whether you are phoning, messaging, browsing the web or taking photos you'll find the Hero a nice handset to use, and a pleasant overall experience. There's been some talk about lag in the Hero UI. We'd like to dispel this, as we didn't experience any lag that could be considered annoying, although to be fair it's not as responsive as the iPhone or the Samsung Jet. The screen is a good size, at 3.2 inches, and has a high resolution of 480x320 pixels (the same as the iPhone), but it's not as good as some other phones for outdoor use. Android also seems to be a robust operating system in our experience, outperforming Symbian in this respect, and on a par with Apple's OS X system when it comes to choice of apps. The Android Market is shaping up very nicely in fact, and you'll find a wealth of third party tools available for download.

The 5 megapixel camera is an improvement over the 3 megapixel one on the HTC Magic, and it can take high quality photos in good lighting conditions, with autofocus to ensure sharpness. But indoors it's another matter, with no flash on the camera, and to be honest it's below average when compared with similarly priced smartphones (but still as good as the iPhone!) And it's a mystery why there's no video calling option in any of the Android phones so far.

The Hero is outstanding when it comes to connectivity, as it has the lot - Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate, mini-USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and a 3.5mm audio jack (so you can plug in any standard fit headset, hooray!) It also supports fast 3G data transfer with HSDPA giving download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Quadband GSM lets you use the phone worldwide too.

Battery life, for a smartphone, is above average, maybe even good!

Overall, this is our favourite Android phone so far, although it's not such a big step up from the HTC Magic. The benefits of the Hero, compared with other smartphones, are the user interface, Android Market apps, and the overall polished nature of the operating system. There are nice touches such as the GPS with Google maps and digital compass, and the 3.5mm headphone jack. Aspects of the phone that are not so hot are the lacklustre camera and the lack of video calling and FM radio - features that have been standard on smartphones for years. It's disappointing that a brand new phone with an advanced new operating system should miss out basic and obvious features. But hey, that's what the iPhone did and it didn't stop it becoming a runaway success, so what do we know about it anyway?

We so wanted to give this phone 5 stars, but we just can't justify it. But still, a very polished phone, and so close to being perfect!

The new HTC Desire fills the few gaps in the Hero's armoury, and is absolutely a 5 star phone.

LG Chocolate BL40 Review

The original Chocolate phone caused a sensation in the phone world. It was a glossy black slide phone with hidden touch-sensitive buttons that glowed red when in use, and was probably the coolest phone of 2006. Fast forward three years. It's 2009 and sliders are oh so 2006. Classic-shaped phones with huge touchscreens displays and fast internet connections are everywhere. It's not a phone any more, it's a portable communications device. Enter the Chocolate version 2 ...

The new LG Chocolate is the fourth in LG's Black Label Series. In a world of near-identical touchscreen slabs, the new Chocolate stands out from the crowd with its unusually long form, enormous display and general air of coolness and mystery. Pick the phone up and hold it. The phone radiates quality with its solid weighty feel and tempered glass screen. With its slender form and sleek piano-black cover with red accents it looks more like a bar of chocolate than ever. Resist the temptation to eat it. Turn the phone on and marvel at the fabulous HD display with its unusual cinematic aspect ratio. It's a bright TFT display with 16 million colours and a monster resolution of 800 x 345 pixels, and measures a full 4 inches diagonally. It comes into its own when viewing HD videos or full screen web pages.

The phone uses the S-Class user interface that appears on LG's other touchscreen phones. In some modes the screen splits into two, providing a dual screen interface, that works very well. In portrait mode a virtual alphanumeric keypad is used for text entry, and when the phone is turned to landscape mode, a full virtual QWERTY keyboard is available. Multi-tap zooming is available when browsing web pages. You can also copy and paste with a single touch. It's an intuitive UI, although not really up to iPhone ease of use. The huge screen should have made for a simple touchscreen interface, but LG have instead used the screen real estate to cram in more features and icons, making the whole thing more confusing than it needs to be. Still, its fun and colourful and shouldn't prevent anyone with half a brain from using the phone.

The Chocolate BL40 is an expensive phone, and when you spend this kind of money it's nice to feel that you're buying more than simply style. Fortunately, the new Chocolate packs in pretty much all of the features that you could ask for. To start with the camera is excellent. It has a 5 megapixel sensor with an LED flash and autofocus. Using the camera is very easy indeed via the touchscreen. It may not have the 8 megapixels of a Cyber-Shot or Nseries phone, but it will take excellent pictures under good lighting conditions, although slightly grainy ones in poor light. Video recording is impressive, with full VGA-resolution recording at 30 frames per second, for good quality videos. You can edit videos with the built-in video editor and view them directly on a TV if you buy the optional TV-Out cable. Video calling is also available.

The music player is excellent, with good sound quality, and there's a 3.5mm headphone jack so can plug in your own headphones, or use a wireless Bluetooth headset. The music player controls are very easy to use and the music player is fully featured. The new Chocolate also comes with an FM radio, and there's the added bonus of an FM transmitter that lets you stream music to a compatible hi-fi system or car stereo. We'll mention here too that the media player supports playback of DivX and Xvid movies.

Other features that you'd expect from a high-end handset such as email support and GPS are also present. The Chocolate may not benefit from a huge range of downloadable apps, but at least it has all the essentials built into the S-Class interface, and you can download Java apps to add to the 7 built-in games. Connectivity is outstanding, with USB, Bluetooth and WiFi present, as well as TV-Out and the FM transmitter. Not only is the phone dual band 3G with HSDPA for fast data downloads of up to 7.2 Mbps, but it also supports quadband GSM making it usable globally.

The memory is excellent too, with 1.1 GB of built-in memory and the option to augment this with a microSD card - cards up to 32GB are supported, providing a huge amount of storage for photos, music and videos. Battery life is surprisingly good. In fact, an ultraslim 3G phone with a huge display is a recipe for abysmal battery life, but in fact the BL40 performs better than a lot of modern high-end phones.

We've been looking forward to reviewing the new Chocolate since it was first announced. Now that it's released, it lives up to our expectations. LG are always pushing into new design territory and the Chocolate BL40 pushes the touchscreen phone into a stunning and original form factor. This is a phone that not only looks amazing, but it feels great to hold and use too. Sure, it's expensive and the user interface isn't as intuitive as it could be, but the combination of looks and features makes this phone really stand out - and in a good way.

LG KS360 Review

In a nutshell: The key feature of the LG KS360 is its slide-out keypad, which makes it a perfect phone for keen texters or emailers. It's a budget PAYG phone, but it still manages to pack in a 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM radio, MP3 ringtones, Bluetooth and a memory card slot.

It's smaller than an iPhone, although quite heavy and chunky, with a thickness of 17mm. But that's because the phone has a full slide-out QWERTY keypad. If you like texting, then you're going to love this phone! Full QWERTY keypads normally come with business phones like BlackBerries, or the virtual touchscreens on high-end phones like the iPhone. But here it is on a budget PAYG phone - it's what keen texters have been waiting for! The KS360 has plenty of features tailored to texting in fact. The threaded SMS feature is a neat way of having text conversations. There's also a full range of emoticons to liven up your texts. As well as texting, the QWERTY keypad makes this a good platform for mobile email. Although the LG mail tool lacks the power and flexibility of a BlackBerry, it's easy to set up and use for personal email.

Like most LG phones, the KS360 has a touchscreen user interface, so you can dial directly from the touchscreen without needing to open up the slide. In fact the slide is really only used when texting or sending emails, so most of the time you can use it with the slide closed, just like a normal phone. In addition to the touchscreen, there's a full range of "normal" buttons for navigation, calling, ending calls, etc, so if you don't get on with touchscreens there's no need to worry.

In fact, this is such a great phone for texting and calling, and so cheap, we weren't expecting it to have any other features. But it does. It has a digital camera with video recording capabilities. The camera's about average for this price range, although it lacks a flash, so can only be used in good lighting conditions. The large 2.4 inch screen has one of the highest resolutions available, and is excellent. The phone has a built-in music player that supports MP3 and AAC formats. And an FM radio too. The built-in memory is not overly generous at 15 Mbytes, but you can add a microSD memory card up to 4 GB. This is enough to store around 1,000 MP3 tracks.

Connectivity appears to be via Bluetooth only, but the battery life is very good. The phone doesn't support 3G, but it does have triband GSM coverage.

To be honest, we're quite blown away by this little baby. We were expecting it to be a bit tacky, but it's really impressed us. The keypad is a big bonus for anyone who sends a lot of texts, and LG have been generous with the amount of stuff that's included in the phone. At this price, we think you'll be impressed too. And it's available in Blue or Pink, depending on which gender stereotyping appeals to you :) Some of our users have reported software glitches with this phone, but most seem happy and for the money it offers outstanding performance.

The new LG GW520 has a similar design with upgraded features.

LG GW520 Review

The LG GW520 is an upgraded version of the very popular KS360. The KS360 has been a big seller in the first half of 2009, thanks to its QWERTY keyboard and cheap price. This has made it an extremely popular phone for texters - like a Cookie, but with the bonus of a proper keyboard. The GW520 builds on the strengths of the KS360 and looks to us like it's going to be another smash.

The GW520 looks like a Cookie, with a touchscreen display, but turn it on its side and you can pull out a full QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard is styled differently to the KS360, but it works very well. The slide gives plenty of room for keys, and we found the size and spacing of the keys excellent. The responsiveness of the keys is top notch too, making this a step above virtual keypads on touchscreen phones. The overall size of the GW520 is slightly more than the KS360 and it's a heavier phone too, but it's not a brick! This is a phone that's almost ideal for texting and messaging, and it incorporates features like threaded SMS, which makes text conversations flow more naturally. It can support email too. We also like the brand new feature of avatars. This lets you set up avatars for your closest friends on the home screen, and you can then click an avatar to view messages, etc.

The touchscreen measures 2.8 inches across, which is slightly less than a Cookie, but more than the KS360. Generally the rule is that larger touchscreens are easier to use, but in this case because the keyboard slides down, there's more screen space available than you might expect. In terms of usability, we think that this outperforms the Cookie and other budget touchscreen phones. In addition to the QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen, there are conventional buttons for making and ending calls, etc.

The GW520 costs more than the KS360, but it has some significant enhancements too. The most important of these is 3G. While the KS360 was a triband 2G phone, the GW520 has 3G and supports broadband internet access right up to 7.2 Mbps with HSDPA. This moves it beyond a simple call and text mobile into the realms of fast web browsing, facebook, youtube, etc, making it a thoroughly modern phone.

Other features of the phone include a 3 megapixel camera with video recording, music player, FM radio and Java games. Connectivity is by Bluetooth. Memory is limited to 40 MB, but the phone can accept microSD cards up to 8GB, providing enough storage for 2,000 - 4,000 music tracks. Battery life is good.

We like the GW520 very much, and we think that it offers a lot more than the entry level touchscreen phones that have dominated the marketplace in the first half of 2009. Its key benefits are the QWERTY keyboard and 3G. On the other hand, it has a camera that's average at best, and is missing video calling. We think that's a sacrifice that many people will be willing to make. The only word of warning that we have about this phone is that users of both the KS360 and the Cookie have reported software glitches and occasional freezing of their phones. Whilst we have not experienced any problems ourselves with the GW520, it is built on the same platform as these other phones, so it's reasonable to expect that there may be some problems here too.

Update: Many of our users have reported that the GW520 will stop sending texts if the inbox becomes full. The solution is to delete texts so that your inbox does not become full.

In a nutshell: The LG Pop is a super-compact budget touchscreen phone. Despite its small size, it features a large touchscreen display with a fantastic fun user interface. The Pop delivers all the goods that you'd expect in this price range: a 3 megapixel camera, a media player, a stereo FM radio, a web browser, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a memory card slot. Similar in many ways to the massive-selling Cookie, the Pop offers an updated user interface, a more compact design and an upmarket look.

LG have taken the massively popular Cookie and turned it into the LG Pop, just in time for the Christmas market! But although the Pop is an enhanced version of the Cookie, it's actually even smaller, although cleverly LG have managed to keep the screen the same size. That's because the screen extends over almost the entire front face of the phone, giving it a sleek almost frameless appearance. It's definitely a nice looking handset. LG are keen to tell us that the Pop is the world's smallest 3 inch touchscreen phone. But perhaps its more useful to say that the Pop has a larger touchscreen than its rival the Samsung Genio Touch, but is significantly more compact in all directions. And the benefits of a large touchscreen display are immediately obvious as soon as you start to use the Pop. As we're fond of saying, when it comes to touchscreens, size really does matter! The extra high resolution and the large physical size of the screen make pressing virtual buttons a lot more fun. Turn the screen on its side for a full QWERTY keyboard, making texting so easy.

The Pop comes with some cool widgets that sit at the bottom of the home screen and allow one touch access to applications such as messaging, web browsing, etc. There are three home pages giving quick access to contacts, multimedia, etc and making the Pop a really fun phone to use. The contacts screen is particularly cool, showing who last contacted you and how they did it. We'd say that the Pop is one of the easiest to use phones around, but with plenty of customisation and fun features to stop people getting bored with it.

The multimedia features of the Pop are similar to other entry-level touchscreen phones. The camera is pretty respectable, with 3 megapixels and video recording too. There's a movie studio app and a slideshow app for viewing photos and video. The music player handles virtually any digital music format and there's also a stereo FM radio built in. The web browser is excellent, although as the Pop lacks 3G, web pages don't load as fast as we might have liked. If you get bored there are plenty of apps supplied, including a surprisingly addictive snakes and ladders game.

Whilst the Pop doesn't have 3G, it is a quadband GSM phone, so you should be able to take it anywhere in the world with you. In terms of connectivity, it has Bluetooth and USB, which is everything that you'd expect from a phone priced at under £100.

The Pop may not have added a lot more functionality compared with the Cookie, but it matches the capabilities of other entry-level touchscreen phones, and it does it in style with a beautiful large display, a super compact body, and a fantastic user interface. We would have awarded the Pop 5 stars, but our recent experiences with LG phones lead us to suspect that the firmware in the Cookie may not be 100% robust. For this reason alone (call it a hunch) we've decided to rate the Pop at 4 stars. Read the user reviews below for real-world experiences of the Pop, and see how reliable the Pop turns out to be. The Pop is good value on PAYG (selling at under £100 at launch) and even better value on contract, with freebies such as free line rental, an Xbox Elite or a Nintendo Wii on offer.

HTC Touch 2 Review

The HTC Touch 2 is HTC's entry-level smartphone offering. It's basically an enhanced version of the HTC Touch 3G, and is a compact, affordable, Windows Mobile smartphone. At this price point, the Touch 2 competes with smartphone offerings from other manufacturers, such as the Nokia 5800. Has it got what it takes to compete? We're not convinced.

The one thing that hampers the Touch 2 is its size. Yes, it's a compact touchscreen phone, but even dirt-cheap touchscreen phones like the LG Cookie or Samsung Tocco Lite manage to fit in larger screens. Call us shallow, if you will, but sometimes size does count. Windows Mobile 6.5 we can't get enough of, but on a 2.8 inch screen with only modest resolution? We're not so sure.

The Touch 2 packs in a fair number of advanced features to justify itself. It includes a GPS receiver, WiFi, HSPA offering blisteringly fast download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The battery life is surprisingly good for such a compact phone. It gives you easy access to Facebook and other cool apps. But the camera is fixed focus and comes nowhere near the quality of Nokia's 5530 touchscreen phone, which costs much less than the Touch 2, and has a larger screen to boot. It seems as though everything has been compromised to fit it into the small body.

If you want a compact, relatively inexpensive phone running Windows Mobile 6.5 (and who wouldn't?), the HTC Touch 2 is your phone. It's your only choice in fact. But we'd suggest that the reason why no-one else has made such a phone is because the compromises that must be made are just too great. The fact is that the phone needs a bigger screen. If HTC had realised that, the Touch 2 could have been a winner. As it is, it's an interesting concept that widens the choice of handsets available, but for us, it just doesn't cut it.

In a nutshell: The HTC Legend is a gorgeous compact touchscreen phone with a brushed alloy finish. It runs the latest Android 2.1 operating system, so there are loads of apps available from the Android market. It has all the usual smartphone features, including GPS, a music player, FM radio, 5 megapixel camera and fast internet access. It's also equipped with a fast processor, plenty of memory and good battery life. Definitely a hot phone!

It seems that HTC can't get Android smartphones out of the door fast enough in 2010. We've only just reviewed the HTC Desire, and now here's the HTC Legend. It's another mid-range (less than £30 per month on contract) touchscreen smartphone and it's clearly another winner.

As we commented in our review of the Desire, Android has come of age, and it's now a proper grown-up operating system with the early beta feel completely smoothed over and the Android Market bursting with apps for you to download.

The Legend is a more compact phone than the Desire, and it shuns the usual "black slab" touchscreen look in favour of something altogether more tactile and sexy - a brushed metallic body. It's an ultra sexy phone, and that's something we don't often think these days when all touchscreens tend to look the same. It's very compact for a touchscreen - significantly smaller than the Desire and not much larger than entry-level phones like the Samsung Tocco Lite. But it still manages to squeeze in a decent-sized 3.2 inch screen. And it's a beautiful AMOLED capacitative screen with a good resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and a good response to the touch. OK, so it lacks the superwow factor that the Desire has, but it's still an excellent screen.

The user interface is a joy to use. The Legend has pinch-to-zoom capability, so you can easily control the onscreen view with your fingers. The screen is capacitative, so it responds to your touch beautifully. The combination of the latest release of Android 2.1 (Eclair) plus the HTC Sense interface make a seamless user experience, and the phone just responds intuitively to your touch. We'd say it's just as easy to use as the iPhone.

The Legend does nearly everything that the Desire does, but in a more pocket-sized device. The camera is a good one, with 5 megapixels, autofocus and flash, plus video recording. The built-in GPS receiver works with Google Maps, has a digital compass and enables geo-tagging of photos. The Legend has a digital music player that can handle all popular music formats and syncs easily with any Windows-based PC. We're delighted to find a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can connect a pair of high quality stereo headphones for the best possible listening experience. An FM radio is also included.

The internet works very well on the Legend. The responsive touchscreen and pinch-to-zoom feature make it simple to zoom, scroll and move around within web pages. The internet is fast and always on, with the 3G HSPA connection offering download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and uploads of 2 Mbps. If you're in a WiFi zone, you can make use of the WLAN connection for even faster data access. There are also widgets for facebook and other online tools. But this is one area where you feel that the larger screen of the Desire would make the experience better.

The 600MHz processor that powers the Legend isn't as fast as the CPU in the Desire, but it's fast enough, and is faster than most other smartphones on the market. The battery is substantial too, with a 1300 mAh capacity. That's plenty to power a device of this type, and the battery should last for a couple of days even with heavy use. There's plenty of onboard memory as well - 384 MB of RAM and the Legend can accept microSD card right up to 32GB.

Connectivity includes WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate, with A2DP support for wireless stereo headsets, a mini-USB connector and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

All in all, the HTC Legend really lives up to its name. HTC and Android are on a roll at the moment, and it's where the action is happening in 2010. Both the HTC Legend and the HTC Desire are utterly brilliant phones. They cost about the same on contract, so the question is which to get? Think of the Legend as a more compact version of the Desire. It has the benefits of size, weight and that gorgeous alloy finish. The Desire has the larger screen, faster processor and more memory. Ask yourself whether you really need that.

Nokia E72 Review

The E72 is a straightforward upgrade of the very successful Nokia E71. The E71 was a very close rival to the BlackBerry Bold, and the E72 delivers almost everything that we were hoping for as an upgrade. But time has marched onwards and the E72 now has to compete with the upgrade to the Bold, the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Has it got what it takes to finally knock BlackBerry off its perch?

The first thing to note is that physically there's almost nothing between the E72 and the E71. They look virtually identical, have the same size and weight and the keyboard feels the same. That's a pity, because whilst the QWERTY keyboard is good, it isn't quite up to the very high standards set by the Bold or Bold 9700. What a shame, because Nokia have proved that they can make brilliant keyboards - the Nokia E63 has quite probably the best phone keyboard of all time! The E72 is a lot slimmer than the Bold 9700, so if you want something slim enough to fit in a shirt pocket, the Nokia might be the one to choose.

The display on the E72 is exactly the same as the E71, which is another disappointment. We were hoping for an increase in resolution above 240 x 320 pixels. For instance, the Bold 9700 has more than double the number of pixels. Still, it's a good display with excellent clarity.

It's messaging that is the reason for buying the E72 of course, and it doesn't fail to deliver. The device is excellent for both text messaging and push email, with support for IMAP, POP and SMTP email protocols. Attachments are supported, and the Quickoffice application lets you view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. The E72 is fully equipped for security, with a keypad lock, remote lock and even encryption for data stored in memory or on the memory card. Full support for Virtual Private Networks is provided.

The E72 can be used handsfree, with either a handsfree speaker or a Bluetooth wireless headset, combined with both speaker-dependent and speaker-independent voice dialling. You can set the phone to answer automatically when using a headset or a car kit.

The E72 beats the BlackBerry when it comes to media, with a very good 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and digital zoom. It also has an excellent video camera capable of recording at up to 640 x 480 pixels, and it has a secondary camera for video calling too. The E72 can handle music playback, and has the added attraction of a 3.5mm audio headphone jack. There's also an FM radio with RDS support.

The Nokia also includes integrated A-GPS satellite navigation, with the Ovi Maps application pre-installed.

You can also use the phone for web browsing. The built-in browser can handle XHTML, Javascript, stylesheets and Flash, so is able to display most websites correctly. You can use the Navi™Key very effectively to zoom in on web pages, a bit like the iPhone. The E72 features HSDPA with ultra-fast data downloads of up to 10.2 Mbps supported. That's pretty well as fast as it gets in 2010.

The E72 has excellent connectivity too, with support for Bluetooth 2.0 (with Enhanced Data Rate), micro USB and WLAN.

The internal memory has been increased to a sizeable 250 MB, and the phone supports microSD memory cards up to 16GB, twice the capability of the E71.

We're impressed by battery life too. The E72 has a monster 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery which delivers stellar performance. You'll struggle to find a phone with better battery life than the E72.

So, the E72 has many strong features, and it isn't an expensive phone either, being available free on contract at around the £25 per month level. At this price, we can ignore the fact that the screen and keyboard don't quite match those of the BlackBerry Bold 9700, and we'll remind ourselves that the Nokia is a lot slimmer than the BlackBerry and has a better camera too! if you want the best business phone possible and money is no object, then we'd choose the BlackBerry, but for everyone else, the E72 is an excellent alternative.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Review

In a nutshell: The Sony Ericsson X10 is a superphone! It's a touchscreen smartphone running Google's Android operating system and layered with Sony Ericsson's unique user interface specially designed for the phone. It's supremely powerful, but very easy to use too. Tech specs include an absolutely enormous 4 inch screen, an 8.1 megapixel camera, GPS, HSPA, 1GB memory plus an 8GB memory card, and a monster battery.

The X10 is Sony Ericsson's superphone and is one of the most anticipated handsets of 2010. What does it do? It does everything! We recently reviewed the HTC Desire - another Android phone - and described it as virtually the perfect phone. Well, The X10 is a phone that can rival the Desire. Android is certainly the operating system of choice if you want the very best that's available in 2010.

Sony Ericsson were slow to enter the touchscreen market, dipping their toe in cautiously with the Xperia X1 (running Windows Mobile) and the Satio (running Symbian). We had the impression of a company desperately in search of a strategy. But we needn't have worried, because behind the scenes they've been busy working on their own implementation of the Android operating system. As regular readers of mobile-phones-uk.org.uk will have spotted, Android has become our new favourite operating system, now that the early adopters who bought the first Android phones have found all the bugs and the Google guys have graciously fixed them. Android is now a smooth and powerful OS, and the Android Market is shaping up nicely, so there will be loads of apps available for the X10.

What SE have cleverly done is to layer the Android OS with their own user interface, a bit like HTC have done with HTC Sense. So what you see when you power up the X1 is interface screens such as Timescape, which gathers together all your communications for any one of your contacts. Text messages, emails, Facebook, Twitter, and even photos are all gathered together, so there's no need to open apps to see what's going on. Similarly, Mediascape brings together all your music, photos and videos. The Infinite virtual button is used to gather together all the related information for a contact or media type. The whole system comes together and works very well. It's very much like a mini computer, but geared to mobile use.

Let's get physical now. The X10's a big machine, that's for sure. But it's the same weight as the iPhone 3G S and only a millimetre or so longer. Yet it's got a screen that puts the iPhone to shame. Yep, you read that right. The X10 has a 4 inch screen, compared with the 3.5 inches of the iPhone, and almost three times the number of pixels. It's bigger than the screen on the HTC Desire and even the Nokia N900 internet tablet for that matter! We think: wow! When it comes to touchscreens, bigger is always better. It makes the virtual keyboard so easy to use you don't care that it's virtual. And the X10 supports handwriting recognition too, if you like that. The screen is capacitative, which makes it very responsive to the touch.

In fact a bigger screen is better for all kinds of things. It's certainly better for viewing photos taken with the impressive 8.1 megapixel camera. Naturally the camera has autofocus, flash and a digital zoom. It also has a smart face recognition feature which not only recognises faces when using the camera, but also recognises faces in any pictures stored on the phone. If you name a person in one of your photos, the X10 can then recognise that person in other photos! By touching the person's face, you can access contact details and other information for that person. If you're thinking that this kind of face recognition is a hard problem for a computer and that it might not have a 100% success rate, you'd be right! But it works surprisingly well most of the time.

The big screen also makes web browsing and apps like Facebook work like a dream. And with internet access via HSPA and WiFi you have a fast always-on connection to the web.

The X10 isn't Walkman branded, but fear not because it has an outstanding music player, with full support for all the features you'd expect, including a 3.5mm audio jack so you can plug in your own stereo headphones. You can also use Bluetooth stereo headphones if you prefer.

aGPS is present too, as you'd expect from a device of this type. It's integrated with Google Maps, and comes with a limited license for the Wisepilot Turn-by-Turn navigation software. As we've already noted for other applications, the enormous screen really makes the most of this feature.

A machine with this much functionality needs some heavy-duty hardware to power it, and the X10's got what it takes. The processor is the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor as used on the HTC Desire and one of the fastest processors available. The phone has 1GB of memory built in and is supplied with an 8GB microSD card too. This is expandable to 16GB. The battery has a huge 1500 mAh capacity, which is about as big as it gets in the mobile world.

Is there anything missing from the Xperia X10? Well, yes a few things. There's no video calling and no FM radio. Our users tell us they don't use video calling, and you can access radio stations over the internet, provided you have an unlimited data package in your contract. Also the version of Android used is 1.6, not the latest 2.1. Is that a big deal? Probably only geeks will notice, but on the other hand many geeks will want to buy this phone. We think that these are minor issues, and they don't stop us awarding the X10 a full five stars.

LG Viewty Smart Review

The LG Viewty Smart is a massively upgraded version of the original Viewty. Its feature list includes a 480x800 hi-res 3 inch touchscreen running LG's new S-Class 3D user interface, a brilliant 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and a quality lens, music player, FM radio, A-GPS, 1.5GB memory, WiFi and HSDPA. All this in a slimline and lightweight modern-looking phone makes this a great phone, although it's not 100% reliable, so loses one star.

The LG Viewty Smart (or Viewty 2) is an upgraded version of the immensely popular LG Viewty, and is very similar to the LG Arena, except that the Viewty Smart has an upgraded 8 megapixel camera. Here at Mobile Phones UK we loved the Viewty and the Arena, so it will come as no surprise that we like the Viewty Smart too.

The Viewty Smart looks much more like the Arena than the original Viewty. It's a slimmer, curvier form, with metallic accents that give it a very "2009" look. And it's entirely touchscreen driven, with just one button on the front face. But LG's new S-Class 3D user interface, based around a rotating cube concept, makes it very easy to use. One of the highlights of this phone has to be the amazing LCD display, which has an ultra-high resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a huge 3 inch diagonal. It's a brilliant platform for running the capacitive touch-display, and also for viewing photos and videos.

This brings us on to the next highlight of the device: the 8 megapixel camera. This is a stunner too. As you are probably aware, the quality of a camera is not determined simply by the number of megapixels, but by the quality of the optics. The Viewty Smart delivers the optics to match the resolution, with its Schneider Kreuznach lens, and can take photos that match the best from Nokia, and can give Sony Ericsson a run for their money too. The camera is equipped with autofocus and an LED flash, and also features a new Intelligent Shot Mode that analyses the subject, background, and lighting conditions and compares the data against seven pre-programmed scenarios in order to take the "perfect" picture. It's taking point-and-shoot to the next level, and does make it easy to get great shots. It's not going to make you the next David Bailey, but as far as point-and-shoot photography goes, we think that this will match most dedicated digital cameras, at least in good lighting conditions. The camera can also record video at up to 120 frames per second, which means that you can playback in slow motion for special effect. Video calling is also available.

The music player handles all common formats, and the video player can play DivX/XviD formats too. Dolby Mobile provides the best quality audio, and an FM radio is included too. But for reasons unknown, the 3.5mm audio jack and FM transmitter that appeared in the LG Arena have not been included in the Viewty Smart.

A-GPS is included however, as well as full connectivity with WiFi, Bluetooth and USB.

The available user memory is a huge 1.5GB and the phone has a microSD card clot that will accept cards up to 32GB, so there is certainly no shortage of storage capacity.

Battery capacity is typical for this type of phone. Heavy users will probably need to charge on a daily basis, and we would anticipate that anyone who is lucky enough to own one of these beauties is going to make good use of it!

The Viewty Smart is a big step up from the original Viewty. LG have improved the camera, the screen, the user interface, the memory and have added WiFi and A-GPS. And they've made it smaller and lighter at the same time! The battery life may have suffered as a result, but we can't fail to be impressed by the strides that LG are making in the touchscreen arena. And speaking of the Arena, the two phones are very similar: choose the Viewty Smart if the 8 megapixel camera appeals, and choose the Arena if the the 3.5mm audio jack and FM transmitter are more important to you.

However, as with the LG Arena, there are reliability problems with this phone, especially on Orange-locked handsets. Check out the user comments below. The main problem reported by users is that the screen blanks out when a call is incoming. We believe that this is related to the proximity sensor that detects whether you are holding the phone. A solution has been suggested by one of our readers - see the review below by Geoff_W from UK on 26th Jun 2009, but beware that this may invalidate your warranty! A safer solution is to keep returning the phone to Orange until they fix the problem.

The LG Viewty was one of the first touchscreen phones to be released. At the time of launch it stood head and shoulders above most other phones, and has remained a favourite ever since. Originally a very expensive handset, the Viewty is now priced as a mid-range phone and is excellent value for money. We originally awarded the Viewty 5 stars, and now in July 2009, we're downgrading it to 4 stars to reflect the fact that 18 months is a long time in the mobile world and you can now get more advanced touchscreen phones with features such as GPS. To be honest though, that's just about the only feature missing!

The Viewty is basically a souped-up LG Prada without the designer logo, and it's a very accomplished product. We loved the Prada's touchscreen user interface, and the Viewty retains the best features of the Prada, but with the addition of 3G, a 5 megapixel camera, an uprated video camera, more memory and longer battery life.

For the benefit of those who haven't used a touchscreen phone, let's recap the touchscreen concept. Not to be confused with touch-sensitive buttons (e.g. the LG Chocolate or Samsung U600), the Viewty has a touch-sensitive screen. This means that icons and menus appear on the screen itself, and you touch the screen to activate the "buttons". The Viewty uses subtle vibration feedback to confirm when you've pressed a button, and you'll very quickly get used to the concept. There are real buttons below the screen for making and ending calls, a jog wheel, and also side buttons for controlling volume, the camera and the music player. We liked the touchscreen interface very much, and the technology now seems to be mature enough for touchscreens to enter the mainstream. If you're a fast texter you might find that the touchscreen slows you down a little, but the sheer pleasure of using the on-screen menus more than compensates for this. T9 predictive text is supported too. A stylus pen is provided if you find the interface too slow using your finger. The Viewty also supports handwriting recognition, so you should be able to find an input method that you're comfortable with.

Apart from the user interface, the Viewty has several pleasures waiting to be discovered. The camera is rated at 5 megapixels with a high quality Schneider-Kreuznach lens, autofocus and a SmartLight feature that makes after-dark photographs considerably clearer. You can also vary the ISO setting to ISO 800 for improved brightness in low light. In common with many digital cameras, the Viewty's camera incorporates an Image Stabiliser function for minimising camera shake. The Viewty can't match the very best camera phones from Nokia or Sony Ericsson, but it definitely ranks as a good camera phone. As well as a top notch still camera, the Viewty's video camera is also something special. It films at high resolution (320 x 240 pixels QVGA) and at very high frame rates - up to 120 frames per second, which enables special effects such as slow motion filming. There are built-in picture-editing and video-editing tools to make the most of these cameras. In addition, a second front-facing camera enables 3G video calls.

The Viewty's music player is nice and easy to use and can handle virtually every music format: MP3/AAC/AAC+/AAC++/WMA. There's also an FM radio built in. Stereo headphones are supplied in the box, and you can use optional mono or stereo Bluetooth headphones if you prefer. The Viewty's memory is generous, with 90 Mbytes of internal memory and up to 2 Gbytes of additional memory (microSD memory card).

We've already mentioned that the Viewty is a 3G phone. In fact it's 3.5G, i.e. it supports extra fast 3G connections using HSDPA which enables download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. Bluetooth and USB connectivity are available, and a USB cable is supplied in the box. The Viewty supports web browsing and email, and there's a useful document viewer that can handle all common file formats (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF).

If we have to find a fault with the Viewty it would be the battery life. The huge touchscreen eats battery juice and we frankly can't believe the official battery life figures from the manufacturer. Still, the Viewty is no worse than the original iPhone when it comes to battery life, and it shouldn't be a problem for most people.

We still love the Viewty. The touchscreen user interface is much more than just a novelty, but check out the latest touchscreen phones from LG such as the LG Cookie, LG Renoir KC910 and LG Viewty Smart.

HTC HD2 Review

The HTC HD2 has the biggest screen on any phone. With an absolutely brilliant touchscreen user interface and the latest Windows Mobile operating system, this is very powerful but easy to use device. Features include a superb web browser, GPS with Google Maps, a media player and an FM radio. It also has a 5 megapixel camera with video calling, although photo quality is only average. But it's large, heavy, expensive and has poor battery life, making it rather a niche product and definitely not suitable for everyone.

The HTC HD2 is an upgraded version of the HTC Touch HD. The HD2 does everything that the HD did, but even more so. The HD2 isn't a small phone by any means. In fact it's noticeably bigger and heavier than the iPhone, although slimmer. In fact, it's a superslim 11mm. It's not going to fit into everyone's trouser pocket and it's one of the heaviest phones in the shops. But the reason why it's so large is the screen. If you thought that the display on the HD was huge (and it was), then the display on the HD2 is absolutely massive. At 4.3 inches across, and with an incredible resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, this is simply the best screen on any mobile phone that we've ever seen. If you want to watch videos on your phone, get this phone!

The screen is a capacitative touchscreen, and it's wonderfully sensitive to the touch. HTC have brought out everything that they can think of to make the user interface on the HD2 the best ever. Apart from the size and sensitivity of the screen itself, the HD2 uses an ultra-fast upgraded processor, so there is no lag at all. The memory has also been upgraded, so running apps doesn't seem to slow the phone.

Perhaps the nicest feature is the new HTC Sense user interface, which is overlaid on top of Windows Mobile Professional 6.5. With HTC Sense, you can easily customise the home page, giving you one-touch access to all your favourite apps, such as messaging, calendar, facebook, etc. HTC Sense is organised around contacts, so you can easily view a person's emails, texts and other contact info in one place. There are great features here, such as the full virtual QWERTY keyboard, the zoom control activated by the touch of your fingers, and the accelerometer which automatically rotates the screen orientation when you turn the phone on its side. Under the hood, the Windows Mobile operating system is powerful and customisable too. The Windows Marketplace apps are starting to grow in number, and you can find plenty of useful stuff there.

The HD2 also has a great music player, benefiting from a 3.5mm stereo audio jack, so you can plug in your own headphones. With support for microSD memory cards, you can easily expand the memory to store thousands of MP3 tracks. It also has an FM radio with RDS. The GPS receiver with Google maps works brilliantly on such a hi-res screen, and has a digital compass feature too. The web browser is also superb, making excellent use of the large screen and touchscreen interface. HTC have upgraded the 3G connection to use HSPA, so you can download at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and upload at 2 Mbps. WiFi is also available, for ultra-fast data transfers in a WiFi environment. Bluetooth 2.1 and USB connectivity is also supported.

So far, so good. What we've described is an absolutely brilliant user interface with an MP3 player, GPS receiver and phone attached. Sure it's big, but how else could it have such a large screen? The problem is that HTC have enhanced the strong points of the original Touch HD, but without addressing any of its weak points. The weak points of the Touch HD were its large size and weight, its poor camera, and its weak battery life. The HD2 doesn't fix these problems. In fact, they have become even more obvious in the HD2. Not only is the HD2 larger and heavier than the original, but HTC have replaced the 1350 mAh battery with a weaker 1230 mAh. The results is even less battery life. The camera is 5 megapixels, the same as the Touch HD, but it now comes with a dual LED flash. It still can't compete with other phones in this price range though.

So, the HD2 has enhanced the strong points of the HD, but failed to address any of its problems. That makes it in some ways the best possible phone, and in other ways rather lacking. The LG KP500 is nicknamed the Cookie. It's billed as an affordable touchscreen phone and in fact there are some amazing deals out there to tempt you. But before you rush off to buy one, join us in a tour of the Cookie, and let's find out what's missing compared to the more expensive rival touchscreen phones.

Let's start by looking at what you do get. You get a genuine touchscreen-driven phone (not just one with touch-sensitive buttons) that is controlled by pressing virtual buttons and icons with your finger or the stylus that's supplied with the phone. Pioneered by the iPhone (and others), touchscreen is the hottest trend in mobile phones in 2009, and it's hard to underestimate the amount of fun that you can have pressing virtual buttons on a screen. Especially for people like us, who don't get out enough. In the early days touchscreen phones were often tricky to use, but these days they're all pretty easy once you've got used to them. We don't think that the Cookie will pose any trouble, although some may find the stylus a nuisance. Anyway, great fun to use! The KP500 also has a built-in accelerometer, which simply means that it senses which way is up and automatically rotates the display. The virtual QWERTY keyboard slides into view when you turn the phone to landscape mode, which looks very cool. The accelerometer is also used when playing games, so you can tilt and turn the phone Wii-style to control movement. You can shake and flip the phone at other times to control various functions. It's all great fun, as long as you don't mind being stared at by passers-by.

The Cookie is more compact than most touchphones. It's about 20% smaller than the iPhone 3G and several millimetres thinner than its big brother, the LG Renoir. And weighing just 89g, it's probably the lightest touchscreen phone ever. We can't think of any lighter ones off the top of our head anyway. But, and this bit is important, LG have cleverly made the phone smaller without reducing the size of the screen. At 3 inches across, it's a big display by any standards, and when it comes to touchscreen, size really does matter! A bigger screen makes it easier to use, and the Cookie is definitely an easy phone to use.

So, the ergonomics are good, and the screen is good. What else is good? Well, it has a media player that plays most popular digital music formats. It also has a stereo FM radio. It's got a good web browser. It supports email and has a document viewer installed. Connectivity includes USB and Bluetooth, and the operating frequency is quadband GSM, so you should be able to use the phone anywhere in the world.

Now let's take a look at what's missing.

The camera is not as good as the 5 or 8 megapixel cameras seen in LG's high-end phones. It's limited to 3.2 megapixels, and there's no autofocus but this is reasonable when you consider the price. The memory is also more limited at 48 MB, although you can add a microSD memory card to bring this up to 8GB. It's not 3G and there's no WiFi, so web browsing probably isn't a good option, despite the big screen, which is a shame.

Inevitably there are trade-offs between price and features. We feel that LG have got the balance just right with the Cookie. By removing the features that most people won't miss, and by installing an average camera, they've not only slashed the cost, but have also made the phone more compact and easier to use in many ways. As long as you won't miss high speed web browsing or the camera quality, you can have all the benefits of the latest touchscreen phones for a fraction of the cost. For example, on contract you can expect to get the LG KP500 with half-price line rental for the duration of the contract, or a freebie such as a Nintendo Wii Fit, an XBOX 360 or even a couple of hundred quid cashback! With deals this generous, it's very hard to find fault with the Cookie.

The new Samsung Tocco Lite is an almost exact copy of the Cookie - there's little to choose between the two phones, except that our users seem to feel that the Tocco Lite is a more robust phone - the Cookie seems to annoy a few people with reported software glitches.

The Nokia 6303 Classic is the upgrade for the Nokia 6300, which has been a bestseller for the past couple of years and one of our favourite Nokias of all-time. The 6303 Classic updates the technology and the styling of the 6300, fixing the 6300's problem of poor battery life.

Slightly larger than the 6300, but with rounded edges, the 6303 retains the smart stainless steel finish of its predecessor, but has a softer, more rounded style. The 6303 is a few grams heavier than the 6300 and feels good in the palm, but is by no means a heavy phone. One noticeable design improvement is the larger screen. At 2.2 inches across, and with 16.7 million colours, this is a comfortable display for this type of phone, and is bright and with a good number of pixels (320 x 240). The large screen, well-designed keypad and familiar Nokia menus make the phone very easy to use.

The camera has been significantly upgraded and has a 3.2 megapixel detector, with autofocus and a dual LED flash. Whilst not a replacement for a dedicated digicam, this is a respectable camera that is capable of taking print quality pictures under most lighting conditions. The video recording capability is good too, with a high maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, although only at 15 frames per second. There is no video calling, as this is not a 3G handset.

The music player can handle all standard formats, and there is also a stereo FM radio with RDS, so that you can see which channel you are tuned to, and also the details of the music playing. And we're delighted to see the addition of a 3.5mm headphone jack, which means that you can plug in any standard-fit headphone of your choice.

An essential for a music player is a decent amount of memory, and whilst the 6303 comes with just 17MB of internal flash memory, it has the option of adding a microSD memory card up to 4GB.

A major shortcoming of the 6300 was the poor battery life - a common problem with slimline phones. Nokia seem to have solved this one, and the 6303 Classic has a significantly extended battery life, although the quoted figure of 7 hours talktime seems to be optimistic - was this test carried out standing next to a mobile mast?

Connectivity is good too. As well as the 3.5mm audio jack previously mentioned, the 6303 has USB and Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate.

The 6303 is priced at around the £100 mark at launch, so don't expect lot of high-end features. But it does have some nice touches, like Nokia Maps (but no GPS received), voice commands, email support and a web browser. The sales package is generous and includes a stereo headset, a micro-USB cable and a 1GB memory card. Nokia have done an excellent job of updating one of our favourite phones, and we highly recommend this phone for anyone looking for a budget upgrade, or in search of a solid reliable phone for business or personal use.

If you have a bit more cash to play with, then we would definitely recommend the 6700 Classic, which adds more functionality and has a smarter, more business-orientated look and feel.

We've waited a heck of a long time for Nokia to catch up with Apple, LG and Samsung and launch a touchscreen phone. And here it is at last! It's a 3G smartphone, and belongs to Nokia's XpressMusic range.

At first glance, it looks like it was worth the wait. It's a very stylish handset. All touchscreen phones tend to look pretty much the same to be honest. What distinguishes the 5800 is its sleekness: it's much narrower than the iPhone 3G, in fact with a width of 52mm, it's probably the narrowest touchscreen phone around. This means that you can easily operate it with one hand. It has a lovely big screen too, with a very high resolution (640 x 360 pixels), which helps to make the user interface easier to use. The device has a wide range of input options: finger touch, stylus and plectrum with a virtual alphanumeric keypad, full and mini QWERTY keyboards and handwriting recognition. The display will rotate automatically when you turn the phone to landscape mode. Normally the XpressMusic phones have dedicated buttons for music, and the 5800 has a dedicated virtual media bar for quick access to music controls, as well as functions like the gallery and web browser. There are also physical keys for power, send and end, menu, screen lock and volume. The big question is: "Is the touchscreen on the 5800 as good as the iPhone?" Sadly, no. But it isn't at all bad. It's just that you need to use the stylus sometimes and the whole experience isn't quite so much fun. But stick with the review, because the 5800 has a lot going for it, and beats the iPhone in a number of departments.

The 5800 has a proper camera for a start. At 3.2 megapixels it isn't the best camera phone by a long way, but it uses Carl Zeiss optics, has autofocus and a double LED flash and leaves the iPhone standing. It also has a decent video camera, which can record at up to 640 x 480 pixels and at 30 frames per second, with stereo sound. A front-mounted video camera enables you to make video calls on a 3G network.

The music player in the 5800 is excellent too. We found the touchscreen controls to be very easy here, and all the features that you'd hope for are here, including an 8-band graphic equaliser and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone is supplied with an 8GB memory card, which can store up to 2,000 MP3 tracks (or 4,000 in AAC format), and if your music collection grows even bigger, you can upgrade this to a massive 16GB. The optional Comes With Music feature gives you unlimited music downloads for a whole year! There's also a built-in FM radio. No complaints for music then.

The 5800's big touchscreen is ideal for web browsing. With very fast download speeds thanks to the 3G HSDPA implementation and a quality web browser, there's nothing to hold you back. The 5800 beats the iPhone here too, with support for Flash meaning that you can watch videos from YouTube and other sites on your phone. The phone is also WiFi compatible, so you can get super fast data transfer speeds in the vicinity of a WLAN network or a WiFi Hotspot.

GPS is included too, together with Nokia Maps. As well as 3G and WiFi, the connectivity options include Bluetooth and USB, plus a TV-Out connection (cable supplied.)

The 5800 XpressMusic is a Series 60 phone, and potentially there are going to be a lot of third-party apps available for downloading too. You get a couple of games and the standard Series 60 organiser applications with the phone, including document browsers and a good organiser.

Finally, we want to mention that the battery life is very good. Phones like this do tend to get used rather a lot, and big screens are hungry for power, but the battery capacity seems to be up to the job.

The sales package is generous, including all the cables you'll need, a stereo headphone, an 8GB memory card, a case, a stand and a stylus. The phone is available in black, red and blue too.

We weren't sure what to expect from Nokia's first touchscreen phone. It's obviously spent a lot of time in the design studio, and it looks like Nokia wisely resisted the temptation to rush something out. The 5800 no doubt has the occasional bug (all smart phones do), but these are few and will probably be ironed out pretty quickly with firmware updates. The 5800 XpressMusic manages to combine the benefits of touchscreen, without many downsides, and avoids being just another iPhone clone thanks to Nokia's attention to detail. It may not be perfect, but we're impressed by just how good it is, and it would be churlish to award anything less than 5 stars.

Just a footnote: some people have got the impression that the 5800 automatically includes Nokia's "Comes With Music" service, which gives you free music downloads for a year. This is not the case. Unless the product is described as "Nokia 5800 Comes With Music" then it's just a standard Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. Hope this clears up the confusion!

The 5230 sits alongside the Nokia 5530 in Nokia's growing range of entry-level touchscreen smartphones. You might think that the 5230 lies below the 5530, but that's not exactly true. They cost the same on contract (i.e. free at around the £15 per month level), and offer similar but complementary features. The 5230 and the 5530 enjoy a peculiar relationship: if one phone lacks a particular feature, you can bet that the other has it, and vice versa. So the 5230 has 3G, but is missing WiFi. It has an A-GPS receiver, but its camera is rubbish. Its display is larger than the 5530's, but the phone is bigger and heavier too. Are you getting the picture?

Let's rewind this review and get back to basics. The 5230 is a Symbian S60 smartphone targeted at pay as you go and contract users looking to pay no more than £15 a month. That's a big market, and we expect the 5230 to be a relatively high volume handset. The good news is that it's the latest in a series of similar phones, so you can be confident that the bugs have been ironed out of the firmware and that the phone will work.

Physically, the phone looks almost exactly like the Nokia 5800, which is the Daddy of this type of handset. That's a good thing too, because it means that you get a very large 3.2 inch display, with a high resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. That's not quite as many inches as an iPhone, but its more pixels, so that you can tell that to your iPhone-owning mates! It's a resistive touchscreen, which isn't as smooth as the capacitative type, but it works well enough and has the advantage of coming with a stylus. The display is fantastic for web browsing, multimedia and simply working with menus. It's a larger phone than the 5530, but that's because of the larger screen and bigger battery inside.

The 5230 is a 3G phone, unlike the 5530, and has high-speed HSDPA, offering download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. It is missing WiFi however, so if WiFi matters more to you than 3G, choose the 5530 instead. If you really need both, choose the 5800. It does however have Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

The 5230 is not branded as an XpressMusic phone, and it lacks stereo speakers. But it does have a music player, FM radio and a 3.5mm audio jack. It also has the bonus feature of an A-GPS receiver, with Ovi Maps supplied.

The most disappointing feature of the phone is probably its sub-standard camera. With just 2 megapixels and no flash or autofocus, this is suitable only for quick snaps. The video camera is better, but with no video calling option. The poor camera is the phone's weakest feature and is probably the biggest reason for choosing the 5530 instead.

The phone comes with a respectable 70 MB of memory and this can be expanded to 16GB by adding a microSD memory card. Sadly, you won't find one of these in the box, so be prepared to fork out a few quid for one of these. You might also need to buy a USB cable too, as this isn't included either.

We mentioned that the 5230 weighs more than the 5530. The main reason for this is probably the increased battery size. The 5230 enjoys excellent battery life as a result.

It's a funny one, the 5230. It has some great features: the large touchscreen display, Ovi Store for apps, 3G, GPS, superb battery life. But it also has some disappointments: no WiFi, no video calling, an awful camera, and an unexceptional music player. Still, if you're looking for a touchscreen smartphone, there aren't many in the price range, and the 5230 expands the choice available.

It's hard not to be impressed by the Vivaz. It's very much like the Sony Ericsson Satio, but cheaper and more compact. Available free on mid-priced contracts (£25 per month) with a choice of free gifts thrown in, it's exceptionally good value when you consider that it blows many similarly priced phones out of the water.

The Vivaz is a touchscreen smartphone running the Symbian operating system. Symbian isn't our first choice when it comes to smartphones, and the first batch of Satios had so many software problems Sony Ericsson had to recall them. However, we hope they've learned from that mistake and the Vivaz will prove to be a more reliable phone.

The headline feature of the Vivaz is its HD video recording. It's capable of recording super-sharp videos at 720p resolution, with continuous autofocus, a video light and an image stabiliser. Its a pretty impressive capability for a mobile phone, and you can easily upload your videos to YouTube to show the world. You can also make video calls. The still camera is pretty amazing as well, having an 8.1 megapixel resolution, face detection autofocus, an LED flash and geo-tagging. For the price band, this has got to be one of the best cameras available. It can't beat the 12 megapixel monster camera of the Satio, but it comes pretty close. So we'd say that the photographic performance of the Vivaz is among the very best currently available.

You can view images on the Vivaz's impressive display. With a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels, it's not quite large enough to display your videos at full HD resolution, but it's still a very finely detailed display. The phone is fully touchscreen operated, with handwriting recognition thrown in as a bonus. It's a surprisingly compact and lightweight handset too, so it's easy to hold in the hand. We found the menus pretty responsive most of the time.

The Vivaz also comes with a great media player, and we're delighted to see that Sony Ericsson have included a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can plug in any standard-fit headphones for high quality audio. With microSD memory cars of up to 16GB supported, there's plenty of room to store your music collection, and there's an FM radio included too.

The Vivaz has aGPS with Google Maps, and a demonstration licence of the Wisepilot turn-by-turn navigation software.

HSPA provides fast internet access, and you can also use WiFi if you're in a WiFi hotspot for extra download speed. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth, USB and a TV-Out connection so that you can view your photos and videos directly on a big screen. There are dedicated apps for Facebook and YouTube too.

Battery life seems to be good, although it will be even better if you remember to close unwanted apps and turn off Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS when not in use.

First impressions of the Vivaz are very good indeed. Sony Ericsson have placed it firmly in the media-focussed camp with its amazing HD video recording and all-round imaging and music capabilities. It comes with a good range of apps, and the use of Symbian as the base operating system means plenty more will be available for download. We're just hoping it's been properly tested and there are no Satio-like bugs to spoil the party.

2010 looks set to be the year of Android. And HTC looks like the manufacturer of choice for Android phones. We've given previous Android phones a "beta" kind of rating, because that's what they were. But the Android Market has expanded rapidly in the past year, and the early glitches in the Android software have been ironed out, making it into a grown-up operating system for real-world users. The only other issues with the early Android phones were related to hardware, so can the HTC Desire overcome all of these problems and become the smartphone of choice for 2010?

Well, let's quickly put you out of your misery and say that the answer is a loud and clear YES!

The Desire is a logical upgrade of the HTC Hero. The Hero was a brilliant phone that received rave reviews on this site, but we felt that it just wasn't quite there. The Desire fills in all the blanks that were missing in the Hero, making it truly the smartphone to beat. The Desire is a mid-range phone too, available free on reasonably-priced contracts, and it's very user-friendly, so we expect this to be an absolute monster phone.

Let's start, as we always do at Mobile-phones-uk.org.uk with a look at the exterior. Pick up the Desire. It's a nicely-styled touchscreen phone that feels solid, but is ultra thin at just 11.9mm. It's slightly smaller than the iPhone 3GS, but has the same weighty feel. Unlike the iPhone it has real buttons at the bottom of the screen, which is no bad thing in our opinion. The screen itself will blow you away. It's a massive 3.7 inches across, larger than the iPhone 3GS and with an unbelievable 480 x 800 pixel resolution, which is nearly three times as much as the iPhone! This is virtually a computer screen fitted onto a mobile phone, and it's the best in its class. The AMOLED display is super-sharp too.

Let's move onto the user interface, because this is one of the most outstanding features of the phone. The screen is capacitative, so it responds to your touch like a dream. The Desire has pinch-to-zoom capability, so you can easily control the onscreen view with your fingers. The combination of the latest release of Android 2.1 (called Eclair) plus the specially-designed HTC Sense interface make a seamless user experience, and the phone just responds intuitively to your touch. Is it as easy to use as the iPhone? Yes it is!

The Desire isn't just a pretty face. Far from it. It's one of the highest-spec phones around. HTC have equipped it with a superfast 1GHz Qualcomm SnapDragon CPU, a massive 576MB of RAM and the external memory is expandable all the way up to 32GB. The battery has a giant 1400 mAh capacity. It's quite amazing that HTC have managed to provide such highly-specified components for a phone at this price point. We wonder if they're actually making any money on it.

All this equipment powers HTC's best camera ever. It's a 5 megapixel camera with face detection, autofocus and a flash. It may not match the best from Sony Ericsson or Nokia, but it's certainly a respectable camera for a phone. The camera is capable of geo-tagging too, as the Desire comes equipped with a GPS receiver. The GPS receiver works with Google Maps (pre-installed) and supports HTC Footprints (geo-tagging software) and has a digital compass.

Musically, the phone comes with a fully equipped digital music player that can handle all popular music formats and that syncs easily with any Windows-based PC. We're delighted to find a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can connect a pair of high quality stereo headphones for the best possible listening experience. And with up to 32GB of storage, you can store all your albums with ease. There's also an FM radio included.

The Desire is in the premier league when it comes to the internet. The huge high-res screen is simply superb for web browsing, and the Android software in combination with the responsive touchscreen and pinch-to-zoom feature make navigating, zooming and scrolling a doddle. The internet is fast and always on, with the 3G HSPA connection offering download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. If you're in a WiFi zone, you can make use of the WLAN connection for even faster data access. There are also widgets for facebook and other online tools.

Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate, with A2DP support for wireless stereo headsets and a mini-USB connector.

We've already mentioned the large battery capacity, and this seems to give sufficient real world performance too, despite that massive screen. You'd do well to keep an eye on how many apps you have running though, and to switch off GPS and WiFi when not in use.

Is there anything that the HTC Desire is missing, or anything that could be improved? Nope, not really. This is probably the nearest we've ever seen to the perfect phone. No doubt there are one or two minor improvements that could be made, but then it would have to cost more. As mid-range smartphones go, this is as good as it gets!

The Samsung Jet (or Samsung Jet Ultra Edition) is a slimline mid-range touchscreen phone that gives a lot, for a modest price. It's a superfast phone, with a responsive touchscreen interface, plenty of online widgets, an excellent web browser, multi-tasking and a superfast processor to power it all. With a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, a music player, FM radio with RDS, and the capability of playing DivX & Xvid videos, it has plenty of entertainment on board. We have to mention the incredible AMOLED display, the 2GB of built-in memory, the 3.5mm audio jack, WiFi and HSDPA. There are just too many good features to list!

The Samsung Jet has been launched with the slogan "Impatience is a Virtue" and according to Samsung it is "the must-have product for those who live fast paced lives and want to pack more of everything into their day."

Yes, the Jet is fast, with a powerful 800 MHz processor (theoretically even faster than the processor used in the iPhone 3G S), a responsive touchscreen user interface and fast web browsing with HSDPA. But for us, the real story is the price. Even though it's only available on Vodafone initially, you can buy the Jet for just £20 per month on contract, which seems like a bargain to us.

The Jet looks pretty much like all other touchscreen phones, with some nice detailing on the three buttons below the screen to set it apart from the common herd. Apart from that, it's almost identical to phones like the Tocco Lite - quite impressive, when you consider how much hi-tech wizardry is packed into this slimline device. So, not only is this a fast device, but it's also sleek and streamlined too, and will easily fit into a shirt or jeans pocket. The TouchWiz 2.0 user interface is tried-and-tested technology and shouldn't cause any problems for most users. And it is very fast and responsive too.

We've got to be impressed by the AMOLED display on this device. It's slobberingly gorgeous. AMOLED is bright, with high contrast, so you can see it outdoors much easier, and the resolution on the Jet is an incredible 800 x 480 pixels, which makes it the best screen we've ever seen on any Samsung phone. In fact it beats most high-end smartphones, yet costs half as much! At 3.1 inches, it's large and this makes a real difference for any touchscreen user interface. This display is so good, it's worth buying the phone for this feature alone!

So, in terms of usability, we'd give the Jet a 10 out of 10. But let's look at the features now. For a mid-range phone, the featureset must rate about 9 out of 10. The camera has 5 megapixels, with autofocus, smile detection, digital zoom and a dual LED flash. It's not going to be shortlisted for the best camera phone ever, but it still beats most of the others in its class. The Jet can record video too, and can play back videos in high resolution in DivX & Xvid formats without conversion. A second camera enables video calling over a 3G network. Musically, the Jet delivers, with a music player capable of playing most common music formats. With DNSe and a 3.5mm audio jack, this ticks our boxes. There's also an FM radio with RDS, so you can see what station you're listening to, and even the name of the artists and song playing.

One of the other strong points of the Jet is the whopping 2GB of memory built into the phone. This will probably be enough for most users, with the capacity to store around 1,000 music tracks, but can be expanded to 16GB with the addition of a microSD card.

Although it's not a smartphone, the Jet does have multi-tasking support, and the TouchWiz interface includes online widgets that can deliver applications like Facebook, weather reports, etc. So unless you're a geek who likes to download and customise, you'll find the Jet answers most of your needs. And if you're one of Samsung's target users living a fast-paced life, you probably don't have time for the downloading and installing stuff anyway. If you do need to download, you'll find the 3G HSDPA and WiFi connections to be nice and fast, whether you're watching YouTube videos or just surfing the web. The web browser is excellent too. Thanks to the huge screen and the one-finger zoom feature, viewing full web pages is easy. The web browser is very well featured, with support for Flash and even multi-window support. It's not quite a laptop, but it's definitely a good mobile web experience.

As well as WiFi support, the Jet has Bluetooth and USB, naturally. The 3.5mm audio jack is very welcome too, enabling the use of standard headphones, or the possibility to connect to an external speaker system or a car stereo. A GPS receiver is included too, but no Google Maps.

So, the Samsung Jet: it's a fabulous phone, with some truly exceptional features. Just remember that it's not a smartphone, so don't compare it with the iPhone, or phones like the Samsung i8910 HD (which both cost twice more than twice as much as the Jet!) Really, this is a fabulous phone for someone wanting more than the Tocco Lite, but not willing to fork out £40 a month for a top-of-the-range smartphone. We guess that ticks a lot of people's boxes.

You may have heard of something new called the Samsung Jet Ultra Edition. Relax, it's virtually identical to the Jet but exclusive to O2. It comes with a BBC iPlayer widget, and has a silver band running around the edge.

Although it lacks 3G, it offers a fabulous fun user interface with easy access to Facebook and YouTube, plus all the features that you'd expect: a 3.2 megapixel camera, video recording, music player, FM radio with RDS, memory card slot and Bluetooth. Available free on contract with a choice of free gifts: from free line rental to a free Playstation 3.

The best-selling phone in the first half of 2009 has probably been the LG Cookie. The secret to the Cookie's success is simple: it's a touchscreen phone with loads of gadgets for just £100. So now Samsung have released the Tocco Lite to go head to head against the Cookie for best budget touchscreen phone. Which phone will win in the Cookie vs Tocco Lite battle?

Well, the Tocco Lite is arriving on the scene 6 months later than the Cookie, so it should be 6 months ahead of the curve, and a clear winner. But in fact the specification is almost exactly identical to the Cookie, and the Tocco Lite is retailing at a slightly higher price, although this may fall in the weeks after launch. What then, is the point of the Tocco?

Physically, the two devices are exactly the same size, to within a millimetre! The screens are identical in type, size, colour definition and pixels. With a good size screen (3 inches) and high resolution, Samsung's TouchWiz user interface works well on the Tocco Lite. TouchWiz can now be regarded as a mature technology, and it seems to be pretty much universally popular. Mobile widgets let you customise your home screen and give easy access to apps such as the clock, weather forecast, etc. There are also widgets for popular web apps such as MySpace, Facebook and YouTube. The built-in accelerometer sensor will automatically rotate the screen when you turn the phone on its side, so you can easily switch between portrait and landscape modes. The virtual QWERTY keyboard is easy to use, and we think that you'll have no problems using the touchscreen. The addition of "real" keys for call, send and select make it even easier to use than a full touchphone. The user interface also supports handwriting recognition and gesture lock.

As we commented earlier, the spec of the Tocco Lite is virtually identical to the Cookie's. There's a 3.2 megapixel camera with digital zoom. Samsung's "Smile Shot" feature lets you take a photo when the camera thinks your subject is smiling. You can also edit your photos on the camera itself. A basic camcorder is available too. There's a music player, FM radio with RDS, and support for downloadable MP3 ringtones. Audio quality is good, with a virtual 3D surround effect, an equaliser and support for DNSe. The memory is similar to the Cookie's, and is expandable to 16GB with a microSD card. When it comes to connectivity, the Tocco Lite supports Bluetooth and USB. Like the Cookie, there's no WiFi and no 3G, which means that features like YouTube are going to be on the slow and jerky side. But remember that this is a budget phone - you can't have everything, and this seems like a reasonable compromise.

The web browser is very good, making excellent use of the large screen and with easy access to RSS feeds, Google Mail, Google Search and Google Maps. The lack of 3G does hamper the web browser though in terms of download speed.

Battery life seems to be pretty good. The Tocco Lite doesn't have the heavy duty battery of its big brothers, the Tocco or Omnia, but it has fewer gadgets to power, so it seems to be up to the job. Just don't expect it to last as long as your ancient Nokia and you'll be OK.

Taken on its own terms, the Tocco Lite is a fabulous phone. Whilst it lacks some of the features of high-end phones (3G, GPS, 8 MP camera, WiFi, etc), it does offer a lot for your money: a beautiful touchscreen user interface with 3.2 megapixel camera, stereo FM radio with RDS, accelerometer sensor, handwriting recognition and up to 16GB microSD expandable memory. It's available at launch with some fabulous contract deals: free line rental, or free gifts such as an XBOX 360, etc, and it comes in a choice of pink or black. The big question for many will be whether to choose the Tocco Lite or the LG Cookie. We have struggled to find a real reason to prefer one over the other, and frankly we can't. It seems that Samsung have made a phone so similar to the Cookie that there's virtually nothing to choose between them. But don't get the impression that we dislike the Tocco Lite - quite the reverse. It's an excellent phone offering outstanding value. Whether you choose the Tocco Lite or the Cookie you'll be getting one of the best phone bargains of 2009. On balance, our user reviews seem to be giving a slightly higher score to the Tocco Lite.

Update: a minority of users have reported a problem with the audio cutting out every few seconds, so that you can't hear the caller. As far as we can tell this happens on O2 only. Mike B has a possible fix for this problem for O2 users: Try going to Menu - Applications - O2 - Get Settings. Install the settings you are sent and reset the phone. Since I did that, and received the settings for PAYG from O2 I haven't had any problems with calls, (at least for the last 2 days). Hope it helps ! Thanks to Mike B, and if you have tried this, please write a review to let us know how it worked. Please also report this problem if you experience it on any other network. John L has an alternative fix for O2 users: go to settings, network settings and for network mode select GSM 900/1800.

How to disable the "Turn Off Computer" button in windows XP?

Today tip is very useful particularly for those users who want to restrict the common users to shutdown public computer in common areas. You can disable the "Turn off Computer" button on the start menu and a common user will not "Turn Off, Restart and Stand By" a computer. Using registry editor, you can implement this task in all windows XP versions with minimum effort.

Follow the given steps to disable Turn off Computer" button on the start menu:

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

Click Start button and type regedit in Run option then press Enter for next.

Here locate the location to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Here in right side panel, right click to create a new DWORD value with the name NoClose.

Now assign number 1 in value data box and close the registry editor.

Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

But next time, if you want to enable "Turn Off Computer" button on start menu then simply change the value of data box to 0 or delete NoClose DWORD item.
